I know what you mean. I'm often struck by how primitive the working conditions are in these old videos, but still they get the job done. It's the skills and know-how that counts, not the shiny new tools, I guess :-)
And that the outdoors planer could survive in the humid climate in western Ireland is astounding! Wouldn't be surprised if they found a bird's nest in it under the tarpaulin.
Old Tools kept sharp with an old stone, with good qulity timber and a good dose of humility. (oposite to much of the woodworking on youtube :-) ) I also loved his good planing technique (no donward preasure on the toe)
Very interesting video. I loved how he could create a beautiful boat with a minimal set of hand tools. Plus the outdoor beltdrive plane!
